"The Olmec are regarded as the mother culture of Mesoamerica, being the first known civilization to emerge in Central America. Their name derives from the Aztec term meaning 'rubber people,' and little is known about this ancient civilization. They are most famous for their large stone architecture and contributions to Mesoamerica, including the rubber ball game, calendar, and religious pantheon, which later civilizations embedded in their societies.
